So you want to dive into creating fulldome content? Get ready for a wild and weird experience. You’re going to need a camera with a fisheye lens so that you can render images that are fisheye (to be exact: azimuthal equidistant fisheye). Call it fisheye, fulldome, or domemaster… They all refer to the same thing.

A Note for VR Animators

While my focus on this post is to collect software which renders fisheye, I have also kept my eye on software which supports spherical rendering. I’m not as thorough in this respect, but you will see a fair amount of mentions to spherical and I hope this helps out the VR crowd. Know that the terms: Spherical, Equirectangular, and LatLong refer to the EXACT same thing. I think that in the near future we will begin to see the lines blurred between the different types of immersive experiences; whether in the dome, VR headset, or some magical mix.

3D Animation:
Fisheye Lens Shaders (Plugins)

A render engine that offers a built-in fisheye is a recent expectation and its quickly becoming the standard. But there are plugins which can add a fisheye lens shader into a render engine that doesn’t have it built-in yet. Within the fulldome industry, Domemaster3D is a popular choice.

— Requires use of Mental Ray (also supports V-Ray and Arnold)

Building a physical dome is one challenge, but mapping the dome to work with multiple video projectors is a whole different challenge. But using one computer for the dome projection enables all sort of amazing opportunities. Hacks for Faking Fisheye (After Effects)

Do you need to fake the distortion of a fisheye lens? There are a few built-in effects within After Effects which can do the job. But be aware that you cannot simply take any flat image and perfectly convert it to fisheye. That is impossible. But you can sometimes use these hacks to enhance the illusion and better warp the footage onto the dome. Most of these are variants of the ‘Spherize’ effect.

More than 180 – by Warik Lawrance
Many fulldome producers adhere to the strong belief that only one type of lens should be used in a planetarium. That lens is a 180⁰ fisheye as it perfectly fits the shape of the dome and causes no distortion of the image. However, this is akin to a film producer or cinematographer only ever using a 50mm standard lens by reasoning that it perfectly fits what the human eye naturally sees. In reality, cinematographers use a wide variety and range of lens sizes to their stories because they are incredibly useful and powerful tools which assist the narrative. So what is the range of lens sizes that can work in the dome? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using different lens sizes? And how can they be used to the best effect?

When All Else Fails… Hemicube Camera

Sometimes fisheye lens shaders don’t work in certain weird situations. Such as rendering certain types of particles, post render action, experimental shaders, and whatnot. In these cases you can fallback and create a hemicube multi-camera rig and then stitch the renders together into a fisheye.

Hacky Solution… Mirror Ball Camera

This is my least favorite option for rendering fisheye images. The idea is that you point the camera at a perfectly reflective sphere. So it requires that you have ray tracing turned on, and probably the amount of bounces raised. But the huge limitation is that your renders will not contain an alpha channel! And for me, that is simply unacceptable.

    Newtek’s Lightwave natively supports fisheye rendering in a very flexible way since version 9.0 (is now 11.5). It is a very affordable product (compared to other 3D packages, except for Blender which is free), but same as Blender has the best rendering performance, for fisheyes are an internal part of the rendering engine.

  2. Cebas’s FinalRender for 3dsMax and Maya has a very flexible and fast native fisheye renderer, as well as other projections. It even has an arbitrary camera model where you can model your own lens geometry.

    • Well that’s a tricky question. And for one, I don’t have equal experience with both Maya and 3DS Max. I’ve worked in Maya for 7 years and feel quite comfortable with any VFX challenge. Maya is my 3D animation tool of choice and is the VFX industry standard in many regards. But the tools are pretty spread out and the learning curve can be pretty steep in the beginning. But once you have conquered it then you can handle any 3D animation toolset. I think the Maya Fluids are incredible and powerful. I also think Maya has the edge for overall animation tools.

      Here is an interesting technical comparison between Maya and 3DS Max.

      One of the pluses, and perhaps one of the big reasons 3DS Max is popular in the fulldome community, is that it doesn’t have a limit in the amount of render nodes per license. So its easy to expand your render farm. But with Maya, each license allows you to render on up to 6 machines at once (interactively on 1 machine and batch render on 5 machines).

      But with that said, we have 5 workstations for Maya scene work and therefore have 5 Maya licences. We also have a 10-node render farm, which has been great for us so far. Sure we dream for more, but surprisingly we have excelled at optimizing 4k render times for our small farm. In the future could expand our render farm to 25-nodes (and still allow 5 licenses for daily workstation use).

      But the landscape is shifting… With cloud render farms coming down significantly in price. GPU rendering is on the horizon too. Also, if you choose to use a custom render engine such as Vray or Maxwell, then you will have to pay per node anyhow.

      As a tangent, for me its a question of Maya or Cinema 4D…

  5. I have some 1:1 aspect ratio motion graphics of an animated textural surface. I’d like to distort them into fulldome format. Since I’m not compositing multiple layers in 3D space, nor rendering a 3D image, what’s the best way of distorting the graphics in After Effects to have it ‘wrap around the dome’? Is it spherize, or something more complicated than that?

    • Good question! For a while now I’ve been wanting to analyize the different options for achieving a hacked fisheye in After Effects. So I created a visual comparison of the different built-in Effects. I would suggest experimenting with Warp, Spherize, Bulge, or Bezier Warp. Each option is simple to implement.

      Also it’s easy to take 360 video and convert it for the dome. This technique doesn’t need any custom plugins, but it also doesn’t give you any control over the camera angle or field of view. But it works!
